Leaving from the port of Skala harbor, a short drive to the impressive Chora of Patmos, a castle-town with elegant, cobbled streets and a traditional charm. Overlooking the hill stands the The Monastery of St. John, founded in 1088 by Saint Christodoulos and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
The Monastery, featuring eight chapels, resembles a Byzantine fortress with fortified walls reaching 15 meters in height, built to prioritize its protection against countless raids, plunders, and conquests by pirates, Saracens, Normans, the Knights of St. John, Ottomans, and Italians.
The Monastery’s Museum houses an impressive collection that includes chalices, crowns, crosses, ancient manuscripts dating back to 1073, as well as religious paintings and icons, including an authentic work by El Greco. Many exhibits from the library, are not open to the public, can be viewed in the museum.
Our tour continues with a visit to the Cave of Apocalypse, where the Apostle John wrote the Gospel and the Book of Revelation (95-97 AD). Inside the cave, you can see the rock believed to have served as his pillow.
Following this unforgettable tour, we board the buses for a short ride back to the port.
